TEST: Determine Vy
PROCEDURE:
  1. Before starting, set your altimeter to 29.92 inches of mercury so that all altitudes will be pressure altitude.
  2. Descend to 500 MSL or nearest x,500 foot altitude (1,500; 2,500; etc.) above ground level in your area.
  3. Slow to Approach Speed rounded to nearest 5 MPH.
  4. Apply full power.
  5. Using a stopwatch, time a climb to your starting altitude + 1000 feet (if starting at 500 MSL, time a climb to 1500 MSL, etc.).
  6. Repeat for 1500 MSL - 2500 MSL, then from 2500 MSL to 3500 MSL, etc. (you can start your climb at 500 MSL and just climb to 10,000 MSL, taking note of the time to reach each 1,000 foot interval along the way -- just watch engine temperatures during climb).
  7. Increase speed by 5 MPH and repeat for each altitude.
