PROCEDURE:
- Perform the Climb Calculations from Calculate Fuel Burn During Climb.
- Top off fuel tank(s).
- Climb to 2000 MSL.
- Upon reaching 2000 MSL, start timing with a stopwatch.
- Fly for 1/2 hour at 55% power (4700 RPM for N600LW).
- Return to the airport and land, but stop timing once you enter the traffic pattern.
- Measure fuel required to top off tank(s) again. This is your fuel burn during takeoff, climb, cruise and landing.
- Subtract the fuel required for takeoff, climb and landing, giving the fuel burn during cruise only.
- Calculate the rate of fuel burn (fuel burned during cruise / actual time in cruise).
- Repeat for 3000 MSL, 4000 MSL, etc.
Note: This test is best done at a non-towered airport with minimal traffic (to reduce time in the pattern).
